“If someone told me I was going to be running an entertainment company one day, I would have laughed!”

Originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland and raised in Ontario, I moved to Calgary in 2003 on my own to pursue a Bachelor of Arts Degree with hopes of going to law school and becoming a lawyer.

During my first year of University, I was hanging out at a local bar where a karaoke show was running. At the time, I had never sung in public before (not even in the shower or to the car radio), so the thought of participating in karaoke was far from my interests. Near the end of the evening, I overheard the karaoke host state over the microphone that it was her last night of hosting and she was looking for a replacement. With a bit of liquid courage, I instantly shot my hand up in the air and shouted “I’ll do it!” To this day I still don’t know what made me sign up for such a job, but from that moment on, I entered into a world of music and entertainment which I never imagined I would be doing! The company who hired me trained me to sing at least 1 song so I could get the show started, and over time showed me how to host and work the equipment necessary to run karaoke. I was extremely nervous when I first started out, and it wasn’t until a good 3 months later that my hand finally stopped shaking while holding the microphone. But as a post-secondary student, I needed the extra funds in my pocket, so a karaoke host I became.

After a few months, I was hosting 3 shows a week which enabled me to become more comfortable in front of a crowd of strangers, and more adventuristic in trying new songs. 2 years later, the company which had hired me originally, informed me they no longer wanted to operate. So I purchased all their equipment & music and began expanding my venues and forms of entertainment. I took the time to research my business, including what other companies had to offer and how they ran their shows. Karaoke then lead to Music Trivia & Improv Shows, and eventually DJ’ing Weddings & Private Functions. Years later, I moved back to Ontario to be closer to family and brought my new business with me, officially registering it as “Scaraoke Entertainment”.

After 17 years, I have built up my own fan base of clients whom are informed on any new shows, while being solely responsible for all aspects of marketing, sales, & advertisement. Since my rapid expansion in 2012, I was forced to leave my full time day job to successfully meet the demands of the DJ world – a very difficult decision to make, but one that I am very proud of everyday. When needed, I contract gigs out to a small team of trusted, reliable DJ’s if I am not already available. We’re versatile and flexible in respects to many different forms of exciting entertainment, and we pride ourselves on working well with all clients. We continue to present ourselves as outgoing, uplifting, exciting entertainers who bring the fun & energy into any venue!

I believe I was meant to be in the entertainment industry now looking back over the years. Every moment that intertwined with the development of Scaraoke Entertainment happened with such ease, as if this was my path right from the very start. I’m sure I could have made a great defense lawyer, but I know without a doubt that my heart would have eventually led itself into this wonderful world of music some way or another. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the encouragement of friends & family, but more importantly, all our scaraoke fans out there who continue to support & promote us. Thank you to everyone (and thanks to my parents for giving me the entrepreneurial-gene)!

“Sometimes the slightest things change the directions of our lives, the merest breath of a circumstance, a random moment that connects like a meteorite striking the earth. Lives have swiveled and changed direction on the strength of a chance remark.”
― Bryce Courtenay
